The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported a fire outbreak at the Idumota underbridge market in the Ebute Ero area.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed the incident in a statement released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated that LASEMA received an emergency call around 10:20 p.m.

“In response to distress calls made through the 767 and 112 toll-free lines at 10:20 p.m., LASEMA deployed its emergency response teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja,” he explained.

“Upon arrival at the scene at 10:55 p.m., it was discovered that several buildings used as shops for selling car spare parts were engulfed in flames,” he said.

He noted that the exact cause of the fire had not yet been determined.

He further stated that no casualties or injuries were reported at the scene.

“Goods and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed in the blaze,” he added.

He stated that the agency, in collaboration with responders such as the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings.

“Law enforcement agencies at the scene implemented crowd control measures to ensure overall safety,” he added.

He explained that efforts to fully extinguish the fire were still underway, with dampening operations in progress to eliminate remaining hotspots.

“Salvage operations to recover valuable items from affected shops are ongoing, and recovery efforts continue,” he said.
