President Bola Tinubu on Friday 22/11/24, sent a letter to the Senate requesting the confirmation of Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (CAS).
This was revealed in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja.
Onanuga stated that Tinubu’s request is in line with Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act.
He also noted that Tinubu had appointed Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, following the illness of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
Onanuga also stated that Gen. Lagbaja passed away on November 5.
He emphasized that President Tinubu is confident in Lt. Gen. Oluyede’s leadership abilities, professional integrity, and experience to effectively lead the army and ensure national security and stability.
Onanuga noted that before his appointment as Acting Chief of Army Staff, Oluyede, a member of the 39th Regular Course, had served as the 56th Commander of the prestigious Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army in Jaji, Kaduna, just like his predecessor.
Oluyede was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, with an effective date of 1987, and was promoted to Major General in September 2020.
Since becoming an officer, Oluyede has held various command roles, according to Onanuga.
