Irate Lagos Commercial Driver Sets vehicle and LASTMA Officer on Fire

On Tuesday, Nigerians witnessed a dramatic incident when an enraged commercial bus driver set fire to both his vehicle and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority official in an effort to evade arrest.

Adebayo Taofiq, Director of LASTMA’s Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, confirmed the event in a statement on X.

A viral video shows a severely burned LASTMA officer after an incident in which others ran for safety.

LASTMA reported that the incident took place in the Cele area, heading toward Mile 2, where officers stopped the bus for traffic violations.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is aware of a disturbing video depicting the driver of a Volkswagen T4 commercial bus, with license plate LSD 355 CK, setting his vehicle and LASTMA officers on fire in a bold attempt to avoid arrest.”

A shocking incident took place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, when a driver responded aggressively to an attempted arrest by LASTMA officials.

The vehicle had been stopped for traffic violations in the Cele area, heading toward Mile 2. During the arrest, the driver and his conductor turned violent, pouring gasoline on LASTMA personnel and physically attacking the officers while engaging in hostile confrontations

The Lagos government agency reported that the injured LASTMA officer, who suffered serious burns, was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
