The Nigerian national power grid experienced its first major failure of 2025, just 10 days into the year, leading to blackouts in various regions on Saturday, January 11.
This marks the 13th collapse in the past 13 months, highlighting the grid’s recurring instability with an average of one failure per month.
As of press time, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and distribution companies had not officially confirmed the power grid collapse.
However, reports indicated that power generation plummeted from 2,111.01 MW at 2:00 pm to 390.20 MW by 3:00 pm.
The Energy Podcast acknowledged the incident on its X account, describing it as the first grid collapse of 2025.
A follow-up post noted that restoration efforts had begun, with 302 MW being generated by 2:40 pm.
