A UK-Based Nigerian Cancels Wedding After Fiancée Justifies a N3.5m Bride Price Demand

A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom had to call off his marriage proposal after being presented with what he considered an exorbitant bride price list by his fiancée’s family.

The story, shared by Princess Adeola on her X account, highlights the man’s emotional turmoil and sparked discussions about cultural practices that may deter potential suitors.

The bride price list, which included items like drinks, livestock, clothing, and cash gifts for extended family members, was valued at around N3.5 million.

The man was heartbroken to learn that his fiancée supported her family’s financial demands, justifying them by citing Nigeria’s economic difficulties. This was despite his deep commitment to taking her to the UK and funding her education.

Having struggled with the challenges of a long-distance relationship, he had previously sought advice from a social media relationship influencer regarding his marriage plans.

Frustrated, he compared the demands to “selling a child” and questioned how a marriage could begin under such financial pressure. The man expressed that his desire to invest in her future abroad should have been valued more than temporary monetary demands.

A man on my platform, currently in the UK, met a woman in Nigeria and, despite the difficulties of a long-distance relationship, was committed to her. He even asked for my advice, and I encouraged him to pursue it. However, yesterday he contacted me, upset after receiving a bride price list from her family totaling N3.5 million.

“We had a deep and emotional conversation. His distress wasn’t just about the cost, but the fact that the woman he loves agrees with her family’s demands, saying everything is expensive in Nigeria,” Princess Adeola shared.
