Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed concern over the increasing influx of bandits from Nigeria’s Northwest into his state, attributed to intensified military operations in the region.
Speaking at the 2025 inter-faith church service for workers in Ibadan, Makinde revealed that security reports confirmed the presence of these migrating criminals.
He also recounted a recent incident during his birthday retreat, where bandits were reportedly camped less than two kilometers from his location.
“This morning’s security briefing revealed that some criminal elements from the Northwest are moving into our state due to increased military pressure in their areas,” Makinde stated.
He added, “During my birthday retreat, bandits were camped less than two kilometers from my location, highlighting the gravity of the situation.”
The governor reassured residents that his administration would take firm measures to counter the threat, collaborating with security agencies and traditional leaders to ensure the state’s safety.
“In Oyo State, bandits will find no refuge. I will not rest until every part of this state is secure,” he pledged.
The governor recognized the difficulties the state encountered over the past year but reiterated his dedication to safeguarding the lives and welfare of all residents.
He called on citizens to work with security agencies and stay alert in order to eliminate criminal elements from the state.
“Together, we can ensure Oyo becomes a safe and secure place for everyone,” Makinde stressed.
His statements have drawn attention to the evolving nature of insecurity in Nigeria as the nationwide battle against banditry gains momentum.
