Arsenal legend Paul Merson has expressed his surprise that Arsenal didn’t “break the bank” to sign 25-year-old Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak during the summer transfer window.
Arsenal had considered bringing in a new striker over the summer and were linked to a potential move for Isak.
Isak scored 21 Premier League goals last season and was widely expected to thrive at Arsenal.
However, the Gunners ultimately opted not to sign a new striker, instead choosing to rely on Kai Havertz in the false nine position this season.
“I’m a big fan of this lad,” Merson told Sky Sports when discussing Isak.
“I’m surprised Arsenal didn’t make a big effort to sign him over the summer. I believe he was the missing piece for Arsenal.”
