The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has declared a two-week warning strike set to begin on December 2, 2024.
The resolution was made during the Union’s National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja today, where ASUP criticized the government for failing to fulfill several agreed-upon demands.
ASUP President, Comrade Kpanja Shammah, announced the planned strike, noting that the government has remained unresponsive to eleven demands, many of which date back to previous administrations, particularly that of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
ASUP had previously given the Federal Government and relevant agencies a 15-day ultimatum to review and overturn all decisions that contradict the provisions of the Polytechnics Act and other governance frameworks in the sector.
The Union also accused the authorities of engaging in impunity and disregarding the clear provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act, the laws establishing state-owned institutions, and other regulatory guidelines.
ASUP also accused the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) of exceeding its authority by interfering with the regular functions of Polytechnic Academic Boards, particularly in matters related to the admission of Higher National Diploma students within Nigeria’s polytechnic system.
