The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from continuing to release monthly financial allocations to the Rivers State government.
The court ruled that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s receipt and distribution of these monthly allocations since January constitute a constitutional violation that must be stopped.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who issued the order on Wednesday, stated that Governor Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget to a 4-member Rivers House of Assembly was a direct challenge to Constitutional provisions.
The Judge further noted that Fubara’s actions in executing an unlawful budget amounted to serious violations of the 1999 Constitution, which he had sworn to safeguard.
The judge consequently barred the CBN, the Accountant General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank from allowing Fubara further access to funds from the Consolidated Revenue and Federation Account.
