Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, revealed that some citizens have been cursing him and his family over the Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly.
However, the tax expert stated that he remains unfazed by the criticism, as his role is a public service aimed at driving the country’s economic transformation.
Oyedele shared this during an event in Abuja on Thursday, December 19, 2024, where he presented the report of a technical committee established by the League of Northern Democrats (LND) to review the contentious tax reform bills.
He noted, “Even on social media, I see many people cursing me and my family. I don’t take it personally. I simply go through the comments and see if there’s anything useful we can address. If there is, we take it and act on it.”
“It’s public service. You’re not supposed to be praised and appreciated all the time. That’s not how it works anywhere in the world,” he stated.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Oyedele to spearhead the reform of Nigeria’s fiscal policies, leading the introduction of the new Tax Reform Bills.
However, certain provisions in the four-part legislation have sparked controversy, with some Nigerians fearing that the bills, if passed, could limit access to government revenue for certain regions.
