A resurfaced video clip of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, speaking out against godfatherism is making rounds on social media.
In the clip, Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), asserts that the influence of political godfathers seen in some Nigerian states will not be tolerated in Rivers State.
Wike specifically expressed that while godfatherism might occur in Lagos State, it would not take root in Rivers.
He stated, “It may happen in Lagos, but not in Rivers; we are different. As governor, my term will come to an end, and I cannot prevent that.
When my tenure ends, by God’s grace, I will step down. If anyone thinks they can replicate what’s happening in Lagos here, it will be difficult.”
Wike stated, “You cannot insist on being a godfather of a state. That’s the problem, and it’s not possible.”
Meanwhile, Rivers State is currently experiencing a major political crisis due to a conflict between Wike and the current governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The two political figures are locked in a power struggle over control of the state’s leadership structure.
