A police inspector, whose identity was not immediately revealed, was fatally shot on Thursday evening by gunmen at a quarry site. The assailants also took his AK-47 rifle, marked Breech No. BE-35-2982.

In an official statement, SP Nelson Okpabi, the Police PRO for Zone Six, confirmed that the gunmen also kidnapped two Chinese nationals and a Nigerian at the Marksino quarry camp in Akamkpa LGA, Cross River State.

According to the reporter, Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone Six, AIG Jonathan Towuru, has initiated a manhunt for the armed attackers, who were reportedly dressed in military camouflage during the raid at approximately 5:20 pm.

Okpabi stated that the attackers gained access to the quarry premises due to a security lapse caused by a civilian worker at the gate.

He added that the AIG has instructed the Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department to head to the scene, with coordinated efforts underway to apprehend the criminals, ensure the safe release of the victims, and bring the culprits to justice.

“The AIG expresses condolences to the family, relatives, and friends of the slain inspector.

“He is determined not to rest until the victims are freed and justice is served on those responsible for this heinous act,” Okpabi said.
