Police Apprehend Arms Dealer for Providing Guns and Weapons to Criminals for Operations in Awka

The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected gunrunner accused of providing firearms and other weapons to criminals operating in the Awka area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this on Tuesday in Awka. He revealed that the suspect, originally from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was apprehended on December 9.

Ikenga recounted that on December 7, officers from the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu Ukwu, acting on credible intelligence, raided a known black spot in Umunaga village, Awka South Local Government Area. During the operation, two suspects were arrested—one from Umunaga village and the other from Umuneri village.

The PPRO stated that items seized from the suspects included a pump-action gun, three live cartridges, a cutlass, charms, and substances believed to be hard drugs.

He added that during the operation, police also rescued two female victims who had reportedly been sexually abused by the suspects.

Ikenga further revealed that, during interrogation, the suspects admitted to renting firearms and other weapons from the gunrunner.

He explained that this prompted the police to take swift action, leading to the arrest of the gunrunner. He also mentioned that the case would be taken to court once investigations are complete.

The reporter, reports that the Anambra police are intensifying efforts to combat the recent surge in cult activities among the state’s youth.
