Hon. Olawunmi Fayemi-Obayelu, a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, has encouraged women in the state to actively participate in politics by contesting for positions in the upcoming local government elections.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has set January 18, 2025, as the date for elections across all 18 local government areas in the state.
Fayemi-Obayelu, who chairs the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, also urged ward leaders and party officials to support women candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Okitipupa, the lawmaker representing Ilaje Constituency II highlighted the crucial role women play in the political and social advancement of any society. She stressed the need for their full participation in the electoral process.
She noted that women possess a clear vision for addressing social issues and fostering the development of local communities, as they have a deep understanding of government operations and their impact on grassroots populations.
“It is important to recognize that women’s participation in politics at the local, state, and national levels is declining significantly, which is why we continue to advocate for increased involvement of women in politics,” she stated.
Fayemi-Obayelu emphasized the importance of granting women the opportunity to hold key positions, regardless of their complexity, pointing to the success of women currently serving in political roles across the state and local councils.
She noted that these women have proven their competence by effectively representing their constituents, underscoring the need to involve more women in governance.
