The Nigerian government has raised concerns about the reluctance of many Nigerians in Lebanon to return home, despite the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

In a statement by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, it was revealed that while over 2,000 Nigerians reside in Lebanon, only around 500 have registered for evacuation.

Although the majority have not shown a willingness to return home despite efforts by our embassy to persuade them, we remain committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens,” Abu-Obe said.

The ministry emphasized the need for cooperation with the evacuation process, urging Nigerians in Lebanon not to resist evacuation, as the conflict may intensify.

The government has initiated emergency measures to prioritize the safety of its citizens, working alongside agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency, the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Immigration Service to ensure a smooth evacuation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that the Nigerian Embassy in Beirut has been consistently advising Nigerians to remain indoors and comply with local authorities’ directives.

The government also urged those who have not yet registered with the embassy to do so promptly using the provided email address.

The statement confirmed that no Nigerian lives have been lost in the conflict so far, and plans are underway to deploy a C-130 aircraft or other available flights to assist with the evacuation from Beirut, where many Nigerians have moved from southern Lebanon, the heart of the conflict.

The Nigerian government expressed gratitude to the international community for their support and pledged to keep closely monitoring the situation.
