Nigerian Government has Provided an Update on the Payment of Workers’ Salaries

The Nigerian government announced that federal workers’ December salaries were paid on Monday, December 23, 2024, during this year’s Christmas celebrations.

Mr. Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, revealed this to  on Tuesday while addressing concerns about alleged delays in workers’ salaries.

He stated, “The payments began yesterday.”

When questioned about the delay in November salaries, he attributed it to shortfalls caused by the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.

He clarified that the issue has since been resolved and the payments have been completed.

“Last month, you may have noticed that some individuals experienced delays in receiving their salaries, as certain ministries faced shortfalls,” he explained.

“All payments, including those with shortfalls, were completed yesterday, with adjustments made to cover the deficits. The timing now depends on individual banks,” he explained.

“It varies from one bank to another when the funds will be accessible, but the payments have been made,” he added.

This statement follows complaints from federal workers in the Federal Capital Territory about delayed salaries and its effect on their Christmas celebrations this year.

A civil servant, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration over the salary delays, stating that it prevented him from traveling to celebrate Christmas this year.

“The delay in salary payments is unfortunate. It has made this year’s Christmas challenging for me and my family, as we couldn’t travel because of it,” he told reporter.
