New Minimum Wage: Nigerian Government has Started the Payment to Civil Servants

Federal government civil servants will start receiving the new minimum wage payments starting from Thursday, September 26th.

This was revealed by Bawa Mokwa, the spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, in an exclusive interview with reporter on Thursday.

He confirmed that workers would start receiving notifications of their new minimum wage payments beginning on Thursday.

However, Mokwa did not clarify whether the payment would include the arrears.

He informed our correspondent, “Federal Government civil servants will begin receiving the new minimum wage from today (Thursday), September 2024. What I can confirm is that the minimum wage payments are being made today, but I’m uncertain about the arrears,” he told reporter.

His statement follows confirmation by the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, on Tuesday, that the government has approved an increase in the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) in accordance with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act, 2024.

This came after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 on July 18, 2024.

Thereafter, the Senate passed the new minimum wage bill into law.
