Hackers have taken charge of the website of the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.
The NBS acknowledged the incident on Wednesday through a post on X, advising the public to disregard any information published on its website until it is restored.
“We want to inform the public that the NBS website has been compromised, and we are working to restore it. Kindly ignore any messages or reports posted until the site is fully operational. Thank you,” the agency posted on X.
Report states that the incident occurred just 24 hours after the NBS released its crime experience and security perception survey report.
The report revealed that Nigerians spent N2.23 trillion on ransom over a one-year period from May 2023 to April 2024.
NBS also issued that approximately 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded in Nigerian households during that time.
The highest number of crime incidents was indicated in the north-west estimated to exceed 14 million, while the south-east had the lowest, with over six million cases.
Lastly, it highlighted that crime incidents were more prevalent in rural areas, with 26,526,069 reported, compared to urban areas, which had 25,360,963 incidents.
