The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has announced the release of Kelvin Okorie, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer who had been detained since September 2024.
According to reporter, Kelvin Okorie, who was initially held by the Nigerian Navy, was transferred to the Nigerian Police Force on Friday following the NBA’s direct intervention.
In a statement from the NBA President, it was revealed that Okorie was welcomed by members of the association in Abuja on Monday after his release.
The NBA President noted that Okorie’s visit provided an opportunity to thank the association for its role in securing his release.
He explained that, under his leadership, the NBA engaged directly with the Chief of Defence Staff, General C.G. Musa, on January 7, 2025, to advocate for Okorie’s freedom.
This intervention resulted in Okorie’s transfer from naval custody to the Nigerian Police, culminating in his release on January 11, 25.
During the meeting, Mr. Okorie recounted his experiences and expressed his renewed commitment to actively engaging in Bar activities.
His determination highlights the significance of unity and vigilance within the legal profession.
