NAFDAC Cautions Bakeries Against Using Saccharine and Bromate in Bread Production

NAFDAC has issued a warning to bakeries nationwide against the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, delivered the caution during an appearance at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum. She emphasized that bakeries found violating this directive would face strict penalties.

“This is where our post-marketing surveillance becomes crucial,” she explained.

“We regularly conduct inspections to check for certain products, sometimes prompted by complaints received through our reform office.

“We have already shut down several bakeries caught using bromate in bread production.”

If we discover or receive reports suggesting that bread contains bromate, we will shut down the bakery immediately,” said Prof. Adeyeye.

She also noted that numerous water production facilities have been closed due to substandard practices or unsanitary conditions.

“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate plays a vital role in ensuring that products registered with us maintain the same quality when they reach the market,” she explained.

“At the initial inspection, we collect samples and conduct tests to verify the product’s compliance.”

“Sometimes, after a product is registered, manufacturers alter the production process or formula,” Prof. Adeyeye stated.

“This is why post-marketing surveillance is crucial. It ensures that the products available in the market remain consistent with the standards initially approved during registration.

“This process, known as market control, is essential for maintaining quality,” she explained.
