Economic activities were disrupted in at least three Nigerian states, including the Federal Capital Territory, on Monday as members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) embarked on an industrial action to protest the non-implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.
According to a reporter, Nigerian workers halted economic activities in Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Ebonyi states, as well as the FCT, by starting a one-week warning strike. This action follows the refusal of some states to implement the new minimum wage in October and November 2024.
Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are frustrated by the failure of the area councils to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage.
In Kaduna, workers brought activities in ministries and agencies to a standstill.
In response, the Kaduna State government stated that it began paying the minimum wage in October, although the consequential adjustment has not yet been made.
Likewise, in Ebonyi and Nasarawa states, organized labor members also disrupted activities.
However, in Ebonyi, Governor Francis Nwifuru issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the striking workers, threatening dismissal if they did not return to work.
Nwifuru stated that the government had approved a N75,000 minimum wage and had already begun its implementation.
Earlier, workers in Ebonyi dismissed the N75,000 minimum wage announcement by Governor Nwifuru as an empty declaration, lacking any concrete action, which led to the warning strike.
