An unspecified number of people are feared dead, and others injured, following a stampede at the gate of the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday 21/12/24.
The incident happened during the distribution of palliatives such as rice, vegetable oil, and money which were donated by Chief Ernest Obiejesi (Obijackson), a member of the community.
Reports indicate that most of the victims were women and children, who had gathered at the gate, struggling to enter amidst a massive and uncontrollable crowd.
During the struggle to enter the gate, many people collapsed and were taken to the hospital, with one woman suffering from critical injuries.
Also, an unofficial source reported that one of the victims, a woman who collapsed during the stampede and was rushed to the hospital, has not yet been confirmed to have survived.
However, reporter Online reports that order has been restored, and the distribution of palliatives has resumed.
