The Kano State government commenced the distribution of N1 billion worth of free fertilizers to smallholder farmers across the state on Thursday. Governor Abba Yusuf oversaw the distribution ceremony at the Government House in Kano, highlighting that this initiative fulfills a significant campaign promise aimed at boosting livelihoods through investments in agribusiness.
During his 2023 election campaign, Governor Yusuf had pledged to drive agricultural transformation by ensuring access to high-quality and affordable agricultural inputs. This commitment was outlined in his comprehensive 70-page blueprint titled “My Commitment for Kano.”
Governor Yusuf detailed that the N1 billion worth of NPK fertilizers would be distributed free of charge to 52,800 smallholder farmers spread across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas. These fertilizers were produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), with the aim of reducing production costs and bolstering food security.
In addition to the free fertilizers, Governor Yusuf announced the State Executive Council’s approval for the procurement of over N5 billion worth of fertilizers. These fertilizers will be sold to farmers at subsidized rates, offering support to those grappling with high input costs and labor expenses, thereby enabling them to enhance their productivity.
Governor Yusuf reassured the public of the government’s steadfast commitment to sustaining food production through regular fertilizer supplies from KASCO. He underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen KASCO and other state manufacturing centers, aiming to stimulate economic growth and bolster revenue streams.
The beneficiaries of this initiative encompass women farmers and individuals living with disabilities, each slated to receive 25 kilograms of NPK fertilizer.
