“Kano Government Under Ganduje’s Administration, With Kabir Yusuf in Leadership, Paid N1.2 Billion to Unidentified Suppliers to Power Street Lights for Five Months, According to the Auditor General.”

An analysis of the 2023 report from the Kano State Auditor-General showed that the state government disbursed ₦1,172,621,765.00 (N1.17 billion) to “unidentified suppliers” for operating streetlights in the state capital from May to September 2023.

Abdullahi Ganduje, the current national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), served as the governor of Kano State from May 2015 to May 2023, after which he was succeeded by Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party.

According to the Auditor-General’s report, the state made a payment of nearly N1.2 billion to companies with unverifiable profiles for supplying 974,460.00 litres of diesel to power streetlights in the metropolitan area.

The report also highlighted that the transaction occurred without any formal contracts or engagement letters to validate the deal.

The report further revealed that there were no records detailing the suppliers or the quantities of diesel supplied to the Task Force in the documents provided for audit review.

It also noted the absence of documentation confirming the quantities received by the store officer or a distribution schedule for the streetlight generators.

Additionally, signed contract agreements between the state and the suppliers were not submitted for audit.

Attempts to obtain and review records or documents related to the Task Force’s expenditures, supplies, and payments proved futile.

The report also disclosed that the government paid N882,980,132.76 to unidentified companies for the supply of 769,845 litres of fuel (AGO/PMS) to the Government House and other institutions.
