Communities in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone are on edge after gunmen, reportedly enforcing the banned sit-at-home order, caused chaos on Monday morning.
According to the reporter, the attacks occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo, resulting in at least five deaths.
A source revealed to our correspondent that most of the casualties were members of the Anambra Vigilante Services.
The initial attack reportedly took place in Abatete, where vigilante personnel assigned to the town’s President-General (PG) were targeted.
Three security officers were fatally shot during the assault, while the PG sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In separate attacks, the gunmen targeted the communities of Abagana and Ukpo.
At the Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area, a member of the Vigilante Group and a motorcycle rider were reportedly killed.
The incidents have left residents of communities in the Anambra Central Senatorial Zone in a state of fear and panic.
A voice note circulating on social media has warned residents of Awka to remain indoors, given the proximity of the attacked communities to the state capital.
A member of the Abatete community expressed concern, saying, “We are praying for the recovery of our PG. This senseless violence has left our community deeply shaken.”
Meanwhile, a Ukpo resident shared on Facebook: “It was chaos. The attackers came out of nowhere, shooting indiscriminately. Shouting no Biafra, no freedom. We are still trying to process what happened.”
