The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters recently shared their experience of spending 68 days at Kuje Prison in Abuja, where they subsisted on beans and garri.
On Tuesday, around 114 individuals detained during the August protests were handed over to the governors of Kano and Kaduna states by the Federal Government.
The detainees were released to the governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after being discharged by the Abuja Federal High Court.
The Federal Government dropped the treason charges against the protesters after public outcry from Nigerians.
However, some of the protesters were only able to reunite with their families on Wednesday.
In an interview with one of the protesters, Hassan Muhammad, a resident of Ghana Road in Malali, Kaduna North Local Government Area, stated: “I was arrested on August 5, 2024, on Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna during the #EndBadGovernance protest.”
“Following our arrest, we were taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where we provided statements. Afterward, we were transferred to the Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID).
“We stayed at the FCID for 18 days before being moved to Kuje Prison, where we spent another 68 days. It was a harsh experience, with poor meals; they served us beans and garri throughout our time there.”
