Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on President Bola Tinubu to obey the United Nations Human Rights Council Working Group’s order to release Kanu.
Ejimakor urged the president not to follow the example of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who disregarded the UN’s directive to free Kanu.
The IPOB leader’s lawyer made this statement in a release on Saturday 16/11/24.
Kanu has been held in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021.
In July 2022, the UNHRC, through a groundbreaking opinion from its Working Group, instructed Buhari’s administration to release Kanu.
The group also called for the former president to provide Kanu with a path to compensation for his arrest and extradition from Kenya to Nigeria.
Regarding the order for Kanu’s release, Ejimakor stated that the Federal Government is obligated to follow international laws and treaties due to Nigeria’s membership in them.
Ejimakor emphasized, “Nigeria is required to implement this decision both in letter and spirit, and it was expected to do so without delay.”
“However, it is never too late to take action, even though Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has already endured over three and a half years of unjust detention,” the lawyer stated.
He urged Tinubu to release Kanu, asserting that the president did not require any court order to grant the IPOB leader his freedom.
