Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore took the opportunity of Muhammadu Buhari’s 82nd birthday to deliver a sharp critique, accusing the former president of “ruining” the nation.
In a tweet on Tuesday, December 17, Sowore stated, “A man who destroyed his country does not deserve honor, recognition, or happ,” adding, “Baba Munafikin Banza, Baba Barawo Banza!” meaning “Liar, thief!”
Sowore’s remarks triggered a wave of reactions from Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter).
Some supporters backed Sowore’s position, with one user, @Qladele, remarking, “And you want to grow old, I pity your life.”
Others, like @AOchiawuto, criticized those who continue to praise Buhari, stating, “Those celebrating this criminal are beneficiaries of his corruption, which makes them criminals too.”
Not all reactions were critical, however. A Sowore supporter, @_oroshiakose, praised his “resilience,” describing his views as “inspirational.”
Another user, @geoffreydpr, linked Sowore’s actions with Buhari’s legacy, saying, “The man you brought into power, with hope that he work hand in hand with you, now see him as a destroyer.”
The discussion over Buhari’s legacy remains polarizing among Nigerians, with some defending his leadership while others, like Sowore, highlight the detrimental effects of his policies on the country.
