APC Reacts as Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Obi, and Duke Strategize to Unseat Tinubu in 2027

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the political relevance of a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Cross River Governor Donald Duke, and Labour Party leader Peter Obi.

The gathering, held at Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, has fueled speculation about a potential alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Reports indicate that the leaders discussed Nigeria’s governance and plans for the next general election.

Although specific details remain unclear, sources suggest the meeting focused on building a united opposition to challenge the APC.

Kwankwaso, the NNPP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, confirmed the gathering on social media. He stated, “I was pleased to be in the company of my friend, His Excellency Donald Duke, and other associates to pay a courtesy call on former President Olusegun Obasanjo.”

He added, “The discussions revolved around key national issues, including the future of Nigeria’s politics and governance. We appreciate Baba’s warm hospitality, support, and reception.”

The APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, criticized the meeting, speaking on Sunday, December 15.

“With all due respect, I hold Obasanjo in high regard, but in today’s politics, Tinubu is far ahead of them,” Ibrahim said.

He added, “Tinubu stands head and shoulders above them in modern politics. The alliance of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke poses no threat. These are individuals who were defeated in the last election.”

Referencing past events, Ibrahim downplayed Obasanjo’s political influence.

“This isn’t the first time Obasanjo has backed a losing candidate. He supported Jonathan against Buhari and also endorsed Obi in the last election, but Tinubu defeated them both,” Ibrahim said.

The APC’s response highlights its strong belief in Tinubu’s chances of re-election.

Ibrahim concluded, “They can meet as much as they want; their gathering won’t yield any positive results. With these same individuals, the APC has nothing to worry about.”

As speculation grows, the political maneuvering leading up to 2027 is expected to intensify.
