Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police, confirmed the arrest and announced that a comprehensive investigation is ongoing. She disclosed that detectives visited the crime scene, gathered critical evidence such as blood-stained clothing and the suspected weapon, and ensured the victim was taken to Banuso Clinic in Ota for medical care.
This unsettling incident follows a similar case in the state. A few months earlier, Tahiru Hamidu was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a mentally unstable woman in the Owode community, located in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. Hamidu was accused of exploiting the woman’s vulnerable condition to repeatedly assault her.
The police were alerted by the victim’s brother-in-law, who reported that Hamidu had threatened his life if he tried to intervene. These cases underscore the widespread issue of sexual violence in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for decisive action by law enforcement and other relevant authorities to safeguard citizens.
Encouragingly, victims of sexual assault are urged to report such crimes without fear of stigma or reprisal. As investigations into Akinmolayan’s case proceed, the public is encouraged to stay vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
