Oba Ewuare II of Benin has bestowed a royal plaque upon afrobeats superstar, Rema.
The Oba presented the plaque to Rema on Thursday during the singer’s visit to the palace ahead of his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
Prior to this, on Wednesday, Rema had accompanied the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the groundbreaking ceremony for Edo Arena.
The governor revealed that the 6,000-capacity arena would be named Rema Dome in honor of the singer.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has been a proud representative of Edo State, showcasing the state’s heritage and the legacy of the ancient Benin empire through his music and performances.
His recent hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, pays tribute to the city of Benin.
In the song, Rema expressed that he deserved a medal from the Oba for promoting the kingdom.
