Nigeria’s Biggest Filmmakers are Predominantly Yoruba – Chude Jideonwo Asserts

Chude Jideonwo has asserted that the leading filmmakers in Nigeria mostly come from the Yoruba region of the country.

He made this remark while addressing the prominence of Yoruba filmmakers in the Nigerian film industry.

In an Instagram post, the media personality highlighted prominent figures such as Toyin Abraham, Kemi Adetiba, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, and Femi Adebayo as examples.

He claimed that Yoruba films have the strongest presence on global streaming platforms, while Hausa and Igbo-language films are nearly absent.

The top filmmakers in Nigeria today are all Yoruba,” he remarked, citing names like Kemi Adetiba, Jade Osiberu, Mo Abudu, Kunle Afolayan, Kayode Kasum, Toyin Abraham, Funke Akindele, Mercy Aigbe, and Femi Adebayo, who has worked on films like ‘Beast of Two Worlds’ and ‘Jagun Jagun.’

He added, “If you think about it, most of the major cinema and streaming films are produced by Yoruba filmmakers. The Yoruba film culture has effectively integrated with other groups, once again taking the lead.”

Can you name a single Hausa or Igbo-language movie on Netflix or Amazon? The only one that comes close is Genevieve’s ‘Lionheart’ from several years ago. It’s primarily Yoruba movies that make it to platforms like Amazon and Netflix and achieve mainstream cultural success.”
