Nigerian singer Chinedu Okoli, well known as Flavour, has distanced himself from the Afrobeats genre.
In a recent episode of the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ with Shopsydoo, Flavour stated that he doesn’t mind not receiving recognition for the global popularity of Nigeria’s Afrobeats, as he does not consider himself an Afrobeats artist.
He stated that he believes he should be recognized for his contributions to African music, but this recognition is lacking because the media primarily highlights Afrobeats as Africa’s musical genre.
“I don’t feel upset when I’m not credited for the global rise of African music because what the media discusses is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artist,” he stated.
“What I create is African music. Artists like Fally Ipupa and Diamond Platinumz are also promoting African music globally, even though they are not Afrobeats artists.
“Often, the media focuses solely on Afrobeats and overlooks the broader scope of African music. If you discuss African music, my name should certainly be included.”
The High-life artist encouraged the media to highlight not only Afrobeats but also other prominent African genres.
