Afrobeats singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, well-known as Wizkid, has proclaimed himself as the first young Nigerian artist to achieve stardom.
He expressed gratitude to his parents for allowing him the freedom to pursue his dreams, though he noted that they were initially doubtful about his prospects in the music industry.
“I was the first young artist to make it big on the Nigerian music scene, so my parents didn’t even think it was a possibility,” Wizkid said, according to Uplift X.
He explained that like most parents, his were uncertain about his career choice, especially coming from Africa. Growing up in a household where his mother was a Christian and his father a Muslim, there was never any conflict about religion or what the children wanted to pursue. His father would say, ‘Do whatever you want. If you want to be a Muslim or a Christian, you’re free to choose and do what you like.'”
“I have deep love for my parents. Their example has played a big role in shaping who I am today. I realized that love was the key that kept them together for so long.”
