Afrobeats singer and producer Maleek Berry shared a story about his experience with Davido during their early days as rising artists.
Speaking on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, the ‘Kontrol’ hitmaker revealed that Davido acted as if he was poor while they worked together in the same studio, despite his wealthy background. He mentioned being shocked when he later visited Davido’s father’s mansion.
“I remember when Davido had only four thousand views on YouTube. When he came to London, I would take him to a studio in Bermondsey to record,” he recounted.
It was one of his cousins who connected us through social media. Back then, he wasn’t famous. We were just two Nigerian guys passionate about music who got in touch.
“He acted like one of those kids without money, but when I visited his father’s mansion, I was stunned. There’s a difference between having money and really having money!
“I was so shocked because, at the time, I didn’t think of him as someone who had wealth. He blended in with us. But when I saw the mansion, I realized, okay, they’re really rich.”
Berry also shared that it was Davido who later introduced him to Wizkid.
