A court in Brazil has ordered the removal of a song by British singer Adele from radio and all global streaming platforms due to alleged copyright infringement.
Judge Victor Torres made the ruling after Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes accused Adele of plagiarizing songs from his 1995 album.
According to Geraes, he alleged that Adele’s 2015 track “Million Years Ago” was copied from his 1996 hit “Mulheres,” performed by Brazilian singer Martinho da Vila.
Because of it, Geraes filed a lawsuit for lost royalties, seeking $160,000 in damages for moral harm, and demanded a songwriting credit for Adele’s track.
The court also warned the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal with an $8,000 fine for each instance of non-compliance.
