A well-known singer and activist Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, known as Charly Boy, has called on Nigerian youths to persist with the planned nationwide protests against poor governance.
Charly Boy stated that those in power should welcome scrutiny and protest rather than suppress it, provided they are confident in their integrity.
He shared this in a post on his X handle on Wednesday, refuting a report that urged Lagos residents to ignore the protest, claiming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is already doing enough.
Charly Boy argued that they try to silence dissent and evade accountability because they have secrets to conceal.
He stated, “This is a season of lies, deceit, propaganda, and illusion. If those in power truly had integrity, they would welcome scrutiny and protest instead of suppressing it.
Their attempts to silence dissent and evade accountability reveal that they have secrets to hide. The skeletons in their closet are evidence of their corruption and abuse of power.”
In a true democracy, governments should be transparent and accountable to the people. They must welcome criticism and engage in open dialogue, even when it’s uncomfortable. This approach helps them earn trust and show their commitment to serving the public interest. However, when they resort to secrecy and intimidation, it’s a clear indication of guilt and a betrayal of the people’s trust.
“Nigerian youths, never back down. If they don’t fear us, they will never respect us.
Nonsense. Their fathers.”
