Nigerian singer David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has highlighted his significant contributions to the afrobeats genre.
The ‘Skelewu’ hitmaker remarked that it’s impossible to discuss afrobeats without mentioning his name.
Davido made this statement in the latest edition of TheBeatJuice magazine.
“Afrobeats can’t be mentioned without my name. It’s impossible,” he said.
Although often considered one of the three biggest afrobeats artists alongside Wizkid and Burna Boy, Davido has previously distanced himself from the genre, much like the other two.
In a discussion on the Business Untitled Podcast, Davido expressed his frustration with the tendency to label all African artists under the afrobeats category, regardless of their individual musical styles.
He mentioned that he prefers being called an “afro-fusion” artist, but clarified that he isn’t upset by the afrobeats label due to its positive impact on African music.
“I’m not offended when we’re categorized as Afrobeats. We need a genre, whether it’s R&B or Afropop,” he said.
“I refer to my music as Afrofusion, but I’m not particular about putting ‘Afrofusion’ on my songs. I understand how long it took for African music to go mainstream,” he added.
