Mr. Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, reportedly collapsed and passed away during an altercation with police officers in Benin City.
The incident occurred on Monday, 2/12/24, at a checkpoint in Upper Sakponba, located in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state, according to a reporter.
A source reported that the police stopped Eboigbodin and requested his vehicle documents, which he presented. However, a discrepancy in the paperwork reportedly led to a heated exchange, with the police accusing him of operating a stolen vehicle.
The source claimed that the officers instructed Eboigbodin to drive to their station, but he refused and insisted on knowing the specific offence he was being accused of. The argument escalated, and an agitated Eboigbodin suddenly collapsed at the scene.
Reports indicate that the police officers fled the scene, leaving Eboigbodin’s wife to take him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command expressed deep concern over the death of Eboigbodin, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State.
Quoting CP Ozigi, the spokesperson stated that the police would investigate any instances of unprofessional conduct related to the incident. The CP also extended condolences to the widow, family, friends, and associates of the deceased, offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
The CP highlighted the strong working relationship between the police, civil society organizations, the NLC, and other key stakeholders in the state. He has, therefore, ordered an immediate investigation into the incident.
“The Command is dedicated to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served in all matters,” Yamu stated.
