Anambra: Mob Burns two of Soludo’s Revenue Agents Alive Over Man’s Death

An angry mob on Friday 22/11/24, burned two men reportedly working as revenue enforcers for the Anambra State government.

The incident occurred at Old Market Road near Venn Road by Egerton in Onitsha, where the men were accused of causing the death of an innocent bystander.

Reports indicate that the tipper driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a bystander, killing him instantly, as the revenue enforcers struggled with him over the steering.

A gruesome video circulating online shows a mob attacking two revenue agents with objects before setting them on fire.

A man who recorded the incident stated, “There was disorder in Onitsha yesterday morning as an angry mob burned two revenue enforcers, while four others managed to escape.

The six revenue collectors had been pursuing a tipper driver over a payment they demanded from him.”

As they were chasing the driver, some of the revenue collectors were struggling with the steering wheel, causing the tipper driver to lose control and crash into a passerby, killing him instantly.

When the revenue collectors realized the damage they had caused, they attempted to flee, but the angry mob in Onitsha attacked them. Two of the revenue agents were burned alive, while four managed to escape.

“This is another senseless death in Anambra, adding to the growing number over the last two years. The person killed by the tipper driver was well-known. We cannot tolerate this any longer. These state government revenue touts have caused more deaths in Anambra than armed groups.”

Another source, a trader, stated, “There was chaos in Onitsha yesterday morning at Egerton by Old Market Road. Revenue officials were struggling over the steering wheel with a tipper driver who refused to pay them a bribe.

During the scuffle, the vehicle ran over an innocent man. Realizing the outcome of their reckless actions, the officials tried to flee, but angry residents pursued and caught two of them.”

Videos of the incident, showing the charred remains of the revenue agents, have been circulating on social media, supporting the account.

Upon being contacted regarding the incident, the Anambra State Police Command Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the report, stating that the police had acted quickly to manage the situation.

He stated, “The Anambra Police acted promptly upon receiving reports of the fatal accident in that area.

We are currently collaborating with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident and to find a suitable resolution, particularly to prevent similar events in the future.

I will update you as soon as I have more information about the incident.”
