Nigerian singer Niniola has revealed why she decided to stay independent despite receiving offers from record labels.
She stated that she turned down these deals because she is conscious of the business aspect of the music industry, unlike some of her peers.
Niniola emphasized that being an independent artist allows her to maintain creative freedom.
The ‘Maradona’ hitmaker shared her thoughts in a recent interview with TVC.
“I’ve been an independent artist for a decade. There are advantages and disadvantages to signing with a record label. I’ve gained insight into the business side of music, which many overlook as they focus solely on creating music.
“Being independent allows me the freedom to do things my way. I have full control over my creativity,” she explained.
After my debut single, a record label expressed interest in signing me, but I was hesitant because I didn’t want anyone altering my style. At the time, Afro-house was unique, and I was the only one doing it. Labels can control your direction since they’re funding you,” she explained.
“For me, having creative freedom is one of the biggest advantages of being an independent artist.”
Niniola also revealed that, while she is naturally an introvert, music helps her embrace her extroverted side.
