The Ondo State Police Command today 12/11/24 confirmed the arrest of a prophetess, Folashade Adekola, following the deaths of Jumoke Adesuwa and her newborn during childbirth at the prophetess’s church in Akure, the state capital.
Reports indicate that Adesuwa went into labor at the prophetess’s church in the Oke-Aro area of Akure, where complications caused severe bleeding after she delivered the baby.
The newborn reportedly died instantly.
The incident was brought to the police’s attention after Adesuwa’s brother filed a report, leading to the prophetess’s arrest.
Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrest during an interview, stating that Adekola had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
“The deceased’s brother reported the incident, informing us that his sister passed away after giving birth in the church. The prophetess is now in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” Odunlami said.
A family source revealed that the family was first notified of the childbirth through a call from the church, informing Adesuwa’s husband that his wife had given birth.
The husband, along with a family member, hurried to the church and found Adesuwa in critical condition.
“When we got there, we were informed that the baby had died during delivery, but the mother was still alive.
“However, we found her lying in a pool of blood, bleeding heavily. We quickly took her to a nearby hospital,” the family source recalled.
He added, “She was turned away by three hospitals because of her critical condition, and sadly, she passed away as the last hospital tried to revive her.
“When we went back to the church to collect the baby’s body, we found it in a room that was clearly unsuitable for childbirth.”
The family later reported the incident at the Oke-Aro Police Station, resulting in the prophetess’s arrest.
Adesuwa’s body has been placed in a mortuary.
