Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that he is not affiliated with any political party, identifying himself as a non-partisan statesman.
The former Nigerian leader expressed concern over the numerous challenges Nigerians are currently facing but encouraged hope and optimism.
Obasanjo made these remarks on Saturday during a thanksgiving service at the Methodist Church, Nigeria, Cathedral of Unity, in Abuja.
The service was held in honor of journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Onyema Ugochukwu, on his 80th birthday.
The former President praised Ugochukwu for his loyalty and support during the 1999 election campaigns, despite Chief Alex Ekwueme also running for the same position within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He encouraged Ugochukwu to continue to stay close to God and remain dedicated to serving humanity throughout his life.
“Recall what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13: your faith must not waver, and you should never lose hope. Even when circumstances seem as bleak as they are in Nigeria today, we must stay optimistic and hopeful.
“Above all, continue to live a life rooted in love—love for your family, for friends and foes alike, for your community, your state, your country, humanity, and for God.”
When we first connected, it was during the campaign. I already knew a bit about you from your reputation. We were two candidates competing within the PDP—myself and Alex Ekwueme,” he said.
