Protest: The IGP has Summoned DCs, CID, and Heads of Investigation Units to Address Concerns Over the Poor Treatment of Minors

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called in several senior officers, including all DCs, CID, and Heads of Investigation Units, to discuss the situation of young protesters identified as minors who were recently arraigned.

According to the reporter, there has been widespread outrage across the country following the arraignment of young children in the Federal High Court on Friday.

The protesters, who faced treason charges, appeared malnourished in court, three months after being arrested during the hunger protest in August.

In response to widespread criticism from various stakeholders, the IGP has directed an investigation into the care and welfare of the detained minors in police custody.

After receiving the investigative report on Monday in Glasgow, where he is attending the Interpol General Assembly, the IGP promised a thorough review of the findings and committed to taking appropriate actions.

This decision was announced on Monday night in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Adejobi stated that “to promote professionalism in investigations, particularly focusing on child-friendly approaches, the IGP has called all DCs CID and Heads of Investigation Units to attend a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center in Jabi.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to upholding legal standards, ensuring fairness, and maintaining accountability, especially in matters involving vulnerable groups.”
