Abia Lawmaker Ikwechegh Arrested by Police for Assaulting a cab Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday the arrest of a lawmaker for allegedly assaulting a driver in Abuja.

Abuja Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh was taken into custody.

She stated that Ikwechegh is currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning.

The police spokesperson stated that the cab driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, reported the incident to the Command.

“Initial investigations suggest that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a disagreement occurred over the delivery method. During the argument, Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly physically assaulted.

“The FCT Police Command is deeply concerned about Hon. Ikwechegh’s disregard for the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.”

After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly dismissed the situation, saying, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ displaying a concerning lack of respect for law enforcement authority.

“The suspect is currently at the Maitama Police Station for questioning,” the statement said.

Additionally, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The Command is dedicated to carrying out an unbiased investigation and upholding justice in every case. Once the investigation is complete, suitable legal action will be taken.
