Tension arose in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State following the reported death of a student, Ariyo Monday, who allegedly passed away after being flogged by a teacher and made to perform 162 frog jumps.

Report has it that Ariyo, a student at Obafemi Grammar School, died on Friday.

According to a video shared online by activist Justadetoun, the teacher brought a trash can into Ariyo’s class, instructing students not to damage it. Ariyo, in a joking manner, responded that the trash can was bought with the students’ money.

She explained that Ariyo’s response angered the teacher, who reported him to the principal and was then instructed to punish him.

Justadetoun mentioned that Ariyo received 164 lashes with a cane and eventually collapsed during the punishment.

The report stated from the video that Ariyo, lying in a hospital bed with a drip attached, appeared to be groaning and struggling to speak.

The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident late Friday, clarifying that, unlike previous reports, the student had received 24 strokes of the cane and was made to complete 162 frog jumps.

Odutola said that he passed away at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta.

She said, “The incident occurred on October 15, 2024. The student was instructed to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was taken to FMC Idi-Aba for medical care, where he died today [Friday].”

The spokesperson stated that the body has been sent to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy, and the investigation into the cause of death is ongoing.
