The sit-at-Home Order has Severely Disrupted Business Activities in Umuahia

Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, was unusually quiet from morning until afternoon on Monday, as many residents remained indoors and numerous businesses stayed closed.

Businesses such as banks, petrol stations, and eateries did not operate, while motor parks were empty of passengers. The few commercial drivers who ventured out reported a lack of passengers.

Major roads such as Azikiwe Road, School Road, Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba Road, Uzuakoli Road, Bende Road, and Bank Road appeared deserted, with only a few people and vehicles available.

At government offices, it was observed that some civil servants were absent, as those commuting from distant areas struggled to find transportation to work.

The Office of the Head of Service on Library Avenue remained locked even by 1:30 pm, while many public and private schools in Umuahia reported low attendance.

Despite the situation, there were no reports of violence or harassment, as the state capital and surrounding areas remained calm, with members of the Abia State joint security outfit, Operation Crush, patrolling to maintain peace and order.

By 3:00 pm, Isi Gate, the heart of Umuahia, began to show signs of life again. When a reporter visited, many traders and transporters who had stayed indoors earlier were returning to their shops, hoping to make sales in the evening.
