Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, has pulled out from the competition, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of herself and her family.

This follows controversy surrounding South Africa’s national beauty pageant, where the government accused Chidimma’s mother of fraud and identity theft, according to the report.

As a result, Chidimma, 23, has faced hostile and xenophobic attacks on social media since being announced as a finalist in the competition in July.

Many people, including the cabinet ministers, questioned her credentials.

The controversy surrounding the situation prompted the Home Affairs Ministry to launch an investigation into her citizenship following a request from the pageant’s organizers.

The investigation revealed “prima facie indications” that Chidimma’s mother might have committed fraud and stolen the identity of a South African woman after Chidimma was born, the ministry reported on Wednesday.

In a post on her Instagram account, Chidimma expressed that while it was a tough decision to withdraw from the pageant, her family’s safety is her top priority.

She wrote, “I want to begin by thanking everyone who has supported me from the beginning of my Miss South Africa journey. I truly appreciate all the love and support I’ve received.”

Taking part in the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an incredible experience, but after careful thought, I’ve made the tough decision to withdraw for the safety and wellbeing of my family and myself.

“With the support of the Miss South Africa Organisation, I depart with immense gratitude for this wonderful experience.

“I also want to take this opportunity to wish my fellow finalists the best of luck for the rest of the competition. Whoever wins the crown will represent all of us.”
