The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) stated that the North is still a work in progress. They noted that various indicators of human development, particularly poverty, illiteracy, health, and security, show the North lagging significantly behind.

The forum distanced itself from the proposed nationwide protest against poor governance, describing it as poorly timed and ineffective.

ACF Chairman Mamman Osuman, speaking during a visit to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, stated that the ACF National President affirmed the forum’s lack of involvement and support for the protest, deeming it counterproductive

He stated, “The purpose of this visit is to foster a more comprehensive dialogue on the ongoing issues of insecurity and poverty affecting Northern Nigeria.

“Northern leaders, including state governors, Emirs, Chiefs, and other Elders, established the ACF in 2000 in response to a similar crisis of widespread insecurity and conflict.

The goal was to unite representatives from the diverse communities of Northern Nigeria on a single platform, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences.”

“ACF is designed to function as a ‘Citizens’ or Elders’ Council, remaining vigilant to identify issues and developments that could cause discord, conflicts, or crises in the North, and to encourage development. Similarly, our state chapters follow this model at a more localized level.”

“Despite our best efforts, achieving peace, unity, and progress in the North is still an ongoing challenge. Indicators of human development, particularly poverty, illiteracy, health, and security, show that the North remains significantly behind. Much work is needed from all Northerners, and it is necessary for both leaders and citizens to act promptly to change this situation.”

“At ACF, we are dedicated to representing and advocating for the interests of the people in the North through our various initiatives. Recently, our newly formed Technical Committee reviewed the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and produced a report. This report served as the foundation for ACF’s input to the joint committees of the National Assembly on constitutional review. We will formally present our contributions to the Northern Governors’ Forum.”

“We are preparing to host two significant events in the upcoming months. On October 19, 2024, General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s highly esteemed former Head of State and one of the few remaining founders of the ACF, will celebrate his 90th birthday. Moreover, in March 2025, the ACF will mark its 25th anniversary since its founding.”

“The ACF intends to commemorate both events with great significance. We will respectfully extend an invitation to Your Excellency at the proper time and look forward to having you as our Chief Host for both occasions.”
