Mr. Uche Nnoli, a forty-year-old man from Nteje in Anambra state, has finally been released after spending seven years in various correctional centers awaiting trial. His ordeal began with a community crisis that led to his initial detention at the Onitsha Correctional Center. Later, he was transferred to the Ogwashi Ukwu Correctional Center in Delta State before eventually returning to Onitsha.
His release came about through the intervention of the Anambra State chapter of the Human Rights Protection Service, based in Naples, USA, which provided free legal assistance. The group learned of Mr. Nnoli’s case from his wife and mother, who sought help due to his prolonged detention without trial.
Chairman Prince Chinedu Ekwunife explained that their legal team successfully navigated the case, ensuring Mr. Nnoli’s return to Onitsha Correctional Center and eventually securing his release. The matter was adjudicated at Otuocha High Court 2, where Justice Okey Onunkwu dismissed the case and ordered his freedom.
Ekwunife praised the judiciary for upholding the rights of ordinary citizens and expressed concerns about the conditions at Anambra State Correctional Centers. He emphasized the urgent need for facility renovations, improved medical services, and better living conditions for inmates.
Looking forward, Ekwunife announced plans by his organization to establish Skill Acquisition Centers within these correctional facilities. This initiative aims to provide inmates with vocational training, enhancing their chances of employment upon release and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
He acknowledged the support of like-minded individuals and public-spirited contributors in funding these programs, underscoring their commitment to reforming the correctional system and supporting the rehabilitation of inmates.
